RotaCare West Contra Costa Free Medical Clinic
Elizabeth Liao is one of our former volunteers who is now in the midst of her second year at UCSF Medical School. Elizabeth began volunteering at the clinic in August 2015 as an administrative volunteer, quickly picked up medical scribing, and then became our Lead Scribe and Volunteer Coordinator. As one of our indispensable former volunteers, we have asked Elizabeth to share her
experiences below:

"Where to start? There's so many things I can say about Rotacare Richmond Clinic (RRC). I volunteered at RRC for three years; my time here has played an integral part of my journey in
medicine. I started volunteering here because I wanted more direct patient contact and there was an opening for scribes. I left clinic and started medical school with so much more. I learned a lot of practical skills that have been very helpful in patient care: not just how to write notes, but also medical jargon, how a doctor approaches and talks to patients, how to work with interpreters, how an outpatient clinic works, how to do quality improvement, etc. At RRC, I found a group of people who
are very encouraging and caring. It was in this supportive environment that I learned how to identify, prototype, and design solutions to workflows and training, which has been very helpful in my work today in design in healthcare. Hands down, I could not have done that anywhere else. To all potential volunteers, come! You can make a big impact at RRC."
